Porsche has long been synonymous with innovation and groundbreaking engineering, and the 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS has proven yet again why the brand remains a leader in automotive disruption. This year, the 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid was honored as the Powertrain Disruptor of the Year at Newsweek’s World’s Greatest Auto Disruptors awards. This accolade celebrates the model’s revolutionary hybrid powertrain that masterfully combines efficiency, performance, and sustainability.
Redefining Hybrid Powertrains for Sports Cars
The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid is not your average hybrid. Its powertrain features a compact 1.9 kWh lithium-ion battery powering two electric motors. One is placed between the engine and transmission, while the other is integrated into the single turbocharger. This design serves multiple cutting-edge purposes:
- Eliminates the need for a traditional starter motor, with the electric motor starting the engine instead.
- Boosts the turbocharger instantly without the use of exhaust gases, reducing lag and ensuring immediate power
- Recaptures excess energy using the e-turbo’s innovative design, storing it in the battery to further optimize the hybrid system.
Weighing only 110 lbs. more than its predecessor, this lightweight, high-performance hybrid enhances performance while staying true to the spirit of the 911.
A Decade in the Making
Porsche’s mastery with hybrid systems didn’t occur overnight. According to Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, this system was built on over a decade of expertise gained through motorsports. Models like the 911 GT3 R Hybrid and hybrid iterations of the Cayenne and Panamera served as testbeds for pushing the limits of hybrid technology in performance cars.
“Our goal has always been to enhance driving dynamics without compromising the weight or performance the 911 is known for,” stated Resch.
Elevating Performance with Advanced Systems
Beyond the powertrain, the 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid also features enhanced technology. The latest-generation Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) has been upgraded to an electro-hydraulically controlled system. Powered by the hybrid system’s high-voltage battery, this innovation allows for faster and more precise adjustments to body roll, giving drivers even better control on sharp curves and demanding road conditions.
Available Across All GTS Variants
Every 911 GTS model now includes this groundbreaking T-Hybrid powertrain. This includes:
- 911 Carrera GTS
- 911 Carrera 4 GTS
- 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet

Deliveries for U.S. customers began in early 2025, and these models are already turning heads among car enthusiasts, luxury buyers, and eco-conscious collectors
Why Newsweek Recognized This Innovation
According to Newsweek, the T-Hybrid system epitomizes what it means to be a disruptor in the automotive space. By preserving the legacy performance of the 911 while integrating cutting-edge efficiency, Porsche has pushed the envelope of what’s possible in the sports car segment. It’s not just about keeping up with trends; it’s about defining them.
