Purpose Built for Performance
It’s only fitting that we get right into the details of the performance of the 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS because this vehicle was purpose built for performance. The 911 GT3 RS features a 518 horsepower, 4.0-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine. This is a 16-horsepower increase compared to the 911 GT, and it was achieved with new camshafts and modified cam profiles, and six individual throttle bodies. This engine is paired to a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung transmission with a shorter overall gear ratio and underbody air intakes to ensure the transmission can handle frequent high loads of use. This drivetrain, along with extreme aerodynamics, adjustable suspension, and driver assists, allow the 911 GT3 RS to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3 seconds flat and reach a top track speed of 184 mph.
A significant performance enhancement comes from the newly added central radiator. This idea was first used by Porsche motorsports teams in their Le Mans class-winning 911 racecars. Typically, you see a three radiator setup on other 911 models, but the new GT3 RS features a radiator that is located in the nose of the vehicle, where the luggage compartment would normally be on a 911. This setup allowed for the integration of additional aerodynamic elements.
Aerodynamic Downforce Fit for a Racecar
At first glance, you can tell that the 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS has significant aerodynamic updates to the entire body, front to rear. First, you’ll probably notice the new swan-neck style rear wing, which sits higher than the roof – a first for a production Porsche. The rear wing is dynamically adjustable and features a main fixed portion and a hydraulic adjustable upper section. The front splitter divides and channels air under, over, and out – all of which serve a performance purpose for either cooling, pressure reduction, or aerodynamics. You’ll also find front wheel louvers on the front and back of the wheel arches for added ventilation and dynamic pressure reduction. Air from front bumper enters the radiator channel and flows out the fins in the hood, the fins on the roof send the air outwards to assist with cooler intake temperatures in the rear, and the vent openings in the rear side panel are aid aerodynamics. All these aerodynamic improvements provide more than 900 lbs. of downforce at approximately 124 mph, and total downforce of 1,895 lbs at 177 mph.
